Sho Tamura

Born in Japan, in 1990.

Shota Tamura developed a passion for motorsport at the age of five through the influence of his parents. Growing up surrounded by racing, he collected motorsport photographs and spent time in karting, which deepened his connection to the sport. At fifteen, he decided he wanted to tell the stories of racing through photography, and began photographing motorsport at the age of sixteen.

Driven by the goal of becoming a motorsport photographer, he studied photography at the Department of Photography, Faculty of Arts, Tokyo Polytechnic University. During his university years, he received numerous awards in both academic and independent photography competitions.

In 2013, he joined the sports photo agency AFLO SPORT, where he covered a wide range of international sporting events, including the Olympic Games, Formula One, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and various other major sporting competitions. Through these assignments, he developed his career as a sports photojournalist.

In 2020, he became an independent photographer.

While covering some of the world’s most prestigious sporting and motorsport events, Tamura felt increasingly drawn back to the Japanese racing series that inspired him to pick up a camera in the first place. Today, his work is driven by a simple question: can photography contribute to the growth of Japanese motorsport, and can it help share its unique appeal with audiences around the world?

His current focus is documenting the culture, people, passion, and stories that exist beyond the competition itself. Through his photography, he seeks to communicate the unique character of Japanese motorsport and preserve its legacy for future generations.

In addition to editorial and motorsport assignments, he also collaborates with camera manufacturers on product development, field testing, advertising, and catalog photography.
